In regards to my teaching style, I tend to tailor it to the individual. Strict method adherence can leave students suffering. I do not teach using sheet music as I have inabilty to read myself. I do not believe sheet music makes a great player. I do believe it is a skill but it absolutely does not hinder the ability to become an amazing guitar player. My method is divided in two categories: Application and theory. For beginning students we work on basic motor skills for the instrument. Through simple exercises, utilizing patterns from diagrams, most students gain a proficiency at handling the instruments within weeks. During this time students are also introduced to the notes and common chords, learning their names, titles and relationships to each other on the fretboard. There is also an Alfred's adult course for the older students. It really conveys everything from actual performance pieces to theory concepts. Once the basics of the piano are learned (i.e reading music, note names and finger positions etc.), pieces will begin to be played. Not to place all my eggs in one basket, I will also personally pick pieces I feel are appropriate with the current skill level of the student, ranging from pop to classical to ragtime to anything I feel would be fun and challenging. For violin, viola, cello and bass, I teach the Suzuki method. The Suzuki method is based strongly on memory and takes a systematic approach to introducing music of increasing difficulty. For classical guitar, I start off with the Frederick Noad system, "Solo Guitar Playing", and scales. As skill level increases, I assign more etudes and standard guitar repertoire. For acoustic guitar, I teach almost exclusively finger-picking. I teach the same high standard skills for acoustic guitar that I teach for classical, but concentrate on masterpieces of the repertoire. Read More
