I work with the student to learn what they are interested in learning. All my students learn to read traditional notation as well as tablature. I like method books like Hal Leonard , especially for the complete beginner - but I supplement with other repertoire I have found throughout the years. I encourage beginning with a nylon string guitar because it is easier on the fingers! I incorporate music theory in all of my teaching. Read More

My name is Scott, and I am a driven, passionate and expressive lover of music. I picked up the guitar at a late age (15) and for 20 years have toured the country performing and recording. I am driven to teach people about the guitar because it has been the most consistant and positive force in my life. Fast forward, and I've now got 16 years of experience under my belt, teaching everything from guitar and bass to music theory, harmony, and ear training. I've worked with students of all ages, either at their homes or in my home studio. Read More

My approach to teaching varies in accordance with a students playing level and needs. With beginners and young students, experience has taught me that it is best to get someone playing actual music as soon as possible, usually in the first lesson. It is just as well to have a student begin by learning a simple riff from a song that they like, as to make them learn some hokey melody from a one size fits all how-to book.Going forward, I continue to work with a new player on music that they would like to play, while simultaneously covering music theory, and technical information, as they relate to the choice of repertoire. Finding what musical style or technique inspires my student is the highest priority. I ask this question when I first meet my students, and I continue to maintain a sense of what the student is inspired by through seeing what sparks passion in my student as my custom-tailored curriculum unfolds for them. I find it greatly rewarding when I can inspire my student to learn about a new style they never thought they would like or appreciate. Read More

I am a dedicated and patient teacher and I am very proud of all the students that I have taught through the years. Its always really exciting to see any progress. While being considerate of the students pace or availabilty, I try to go in small steps that are easily accomplished each week, expecting constancy in the practice. Most cases, 20m/day every day is preferable than practicing for 2 hours straight the day before the lesson. Read More
