Instruments: Piano Guitar
I teach beginner piano, and also guitar, all ages and levels. My approach is for you to experience playing music as something enjoyable, something you like, and that you look forward to learning more about. Teaching and learning music is fun for me so I try to balance the fun with learning the basics! For young students my approach is about patience, positive reinforcement, moving at the right pace, staying upbeat and focused through a lesson, and reinforcing the key parts. Read More

I started teaching during my last two years at Berklee. I discovered that I actually preferred teaching over gigging. So, after graduating, I started working as a full-time guitar instructor at Mars Music in the Dallas area. When they went out of business I took over most of the students and started working on my own. Over the years I have worked for a variety of music schools as well as privately. Read More

With beginners and especially children, I only assume that one's knowledge of the guitar is at best at a basic level. I'll begin by teaching how to hold the instrument as well as posture. Also I'll teach basic strumming patterns for the student to get familiar with the guitar. With students at an intermediate level, I'll ask how much they may already know, or what they would like to learn. Read More

For beginners, I have a multitude of etudes, simple songs, and exercises to encourage sight-reading, finger comfortability, and basic cognitive understanding of music fundamentals such as scales. For guitar, I usually begin with fun simple songs such as "What do we do with the Drunken Sailor" and a simple blues. For woodwind instruments, I'll typically begin with songs such as Hot Cross Buns, Mary Had a Little Lamb, or some holiday songs during the holiday season. Read More

I like to get results as soon as possible and stress the fundamentals as they never vary. My goal is to eventually get you playing what you'd like to be playing as soon as possible! We need to be realistic where this is concerned, but your successes will make you want to keep moving forward! Getting to where you want to be musically is the ultimate goal for both you and I. I work to custom-tailor my lessons for each individual student based on their skill level and musical tastes (my main areas of focus for guitar are in the pop/rock/folk/indie genres ranging back to the 60s up to current music and classical/pop/electronic for piano/keys). I believe the best way to learn music is to play music that excites you. I teach everything from technique to theory using the students favorite songs and adjusting them as needed. Read More

I always start with what the student is interested in. I find that learning music comes much more naturally when the student is inspired and entertained by what they are trying to learn. I come from a long tradition of learning music by ear. I believe this is the best way to develop true musicality. While I very much see the value in sheet music, I believe that reading music without being about to play it by ear is like being about to write and write but not speak and understand English.
