I would describe my methodology as strength-based but rooted in patience and enjoyment. As each student brings with them characteristics that are physical, mental as well as emotional, learning these characteristics allows me insights which form the creative process. For example, I had a student years ago that had a finger anomaly (he had been bit on the finger by his wife's cat so we called it "cat scratch finger") and this prevented him from laying his ring finger flat on his fretting hand. I have been playing music since I was about 8 years old. I started with the drums once my parents tired of my "playing" the kitchen! I started playing the drums at 11 years old and had my first student when I was old enough to drive. I started playing guitar at 25 when my life made keeping drums impractical. I picked up bass while playing with a small jazz group that did not have a bass player. Read More

To me it is one of the greatest rewards to see my students understand a concept or play a difficult passage. I believe it's important for each student to progress at his or her own pace because everyone has a different mindset. I often tell my students to just work on the first and second staff of the music so they don't overload themselves with work. Setting reasonable goals fuels the students desire to progress and gets them excited to continue learning more. Read More

I like to start with basics in every way.. holding the instrument, tuning, songs that interest them, styles, and some history. I want people to be able to play some basic songs fairly quickly. Seeing results in yourself is important to keep motivated. I think it can seem like a impossible thing sometimes. I want everyone to feel like they have accomplished something because music isnt easy. Basics go a long way in most everything in life. Read More

Typically I like to using songs and common chord progressions and incorporate different skills we are working on into songs. This way the student learns a repertoire while learning skills. However this is up for debate and we can cover whatever the student desires. Often times teachers teach a blanket method using certain scales, chords, ect, expecting that this will miraculously result in the improvement the student desires. I am firm believer that this is not the case. Read More

I've played mandolin and guitar in several stringbands, and currently perform with Chain Station (chainstation.com), based in Denver, CO. Aside from guitar and mandolin, I also play the fiddle and ukulele. Read More
