I have also found improvisation to be the most effective way of allowing students to express themselves and feel excited about playing. On guitar I use the Hal Leonard method and then move into learning blues scales and pentatonic scales for soloing and then move into repertoire they are interested in. On drums, I will teach them rudiments to use when playing as well as play different drum charts to songs they enjoy. Lessons will vary, depending on each student's needs, wants, and capability. I think it's important to consistently accomplish small goals in order to raise one's self esteem and motivation to practice the instrument. I put a strong emphasis on listening, reading, writing, improvisation, and playing with others. Students who are new to the instrument will be introduced to the fundamentals of the guitar. From then on, students will work to set their own goals, ranging from wanting to be to play their favorite Justin Bieber songs, or if diving deep into the world of jazz. Read More

For the beginner my method is to start with the basics. You will learn how to read standard notation, and tabs. We will work on technique, and help you develop a nice tone. I also like to incorporate music that the students want to learn to make it fun and exciting as well. Even though learning the guitar can be hard work, it should also be really fun.
