During my time at The Berklee College of Music I took classes in pedagogy, and every teacher I have had the pleasure of studying with has functioned as an invaluable model for how to teach, and the many different ways to articulate and illuminate the nuances of playing the guitar, and playing music. While playing in a jazz combo in college I was asked to teach guitar to a couple of people. From there I gradually built up piano and guitar students over the years on a part-time basis. I've taught children through adults in many styles: rock, pop, folk, jazz, classical, and r&b. I tailor my teaching method on a student to student basis. For beginners, I find what bands and music they are interested in and then pick some songs that will be easy for them to get started on quickly. I also try to incorporate basic music reading and notation, especially with younger students. For more advanced students, I assess where they are at and make sure that all fundamentals and techniques are strong, and then come up with a plan to help them progress. Read More
