I've been teaching for a total of three years now. In that time I've had many different students and picked up on many different teaching techniques as a result. My experience is mostly with late elementary school students but I have also taught middle school and early high school students as well. I would consider myself most proficient in teaching those with little to no experience, but I truly enjoy teaching those who already have goals in mind when they first walk through the door as that is the starting point from my perspective. The most important thing for any student of any skill level is to be excited about playing and practicing their instrument. For beginners, I start by introducing the instrument and how all the parts work together to make music. We then move on to the basics of chords and scales, along with exercises to help build dexterity in the fingers. For intermediate or more advanced students, lessons are catered more to what that particular student needs, whether they wish to work through particular songs, styles, or techniques. Read More

My teaching methods are largely dependant on the needs and experience of the student. For begining guitar, bass, and key board students I generally work with several method books, and supply supplimentary materials as required. I assess a students learning style and develop lesson plans that emphaisze their strenths, and encourge them to develop. Read More

My program is one that I have developed over the last 18 years. I use no method books. I ask my students to bring a blank manuscript book that I will fill up as we go forward. I also highly encourage all of my students to have a keyboard of some kind available to them, IE: a piano, organ, or even one of those battery-powered little CASIO keyboards that one can buy for $15-25 at a Salvation Army or Goodwill store. I believe wholeheartedly that music is supposed to be fun and I have every intention of keeping it that way as an instructor. That isn't to say that learning the guitar is easy. Unfortunately, for most of us it just isn't. However, I do believe that the best way to approach the guitar is recognizing that 1) You're never done learning and 2) That's a good thing. Treating every accomplishment and victory with the proper pat on the back is crucial. Read More

I began teaching guitar and electric bass when I myself was in high school and have continued to teach over the years ever since. I've taught everyone from pre-teens to retirees and have done my best to instill a sense of discipline and an understanding of the role of both instruments in the rhythm section. My aim in teaching is to prepare my students for real-world scenarios, with an emphasis on how to "lock in" with other musicians. Read More
