My experience learning music by ear, theory, intuition, and sheet music on many different instruments has given me a strong background to adapt to the needs of any student. So, regardless of skill level, I like to discuss any songs, artists, and styles that the student might be drawn to. Whether the student wants to focus on sheet music like Alfred Music or Hal Leonard, theory lessons and exercises, or develop their intuition and ear, I'm excited to cater the lesson plan to you. I use various methods and books depending on the style, age, ability etc. I always keep my eye out for new books and open to suggestions. A few examples. With classical guitar students who are over 10 yo I prefer to use Christopher Parkening Guitar Method and Frederick Noad "Solo Guitar Playing" The latter suits more mature (both mentally and physically) students. With younger guitar students , 6-9 yo, I usually start by using basic guitar methods such as Hal Leonard Essential elements or "Everybody's Guitar Method" and my own easy arrangements of popular songs before shifting to Parkening. During my first meeting with a new student I ask them questions about their prior experiences, current knowledge, and musical aspirations. From there I tailor a unique learning strategy geared towards their goals, personality, and aptitude. I always try to use music that the student enjoys to spotlight the concept we are covering, and encourage the student to think about it while they listen to their favorite songs. The greatest payoff I can think of is when a student gets the immediate satisfaction that comes along with hearing an audience cheer for them after a good performance, and I do my best to curate these opportunities! I began playing guitar at the age of 15 and have been writing and performing ever since. I was a professional touring musician for 12 years and I had the great privilege to share the stage with Bon Jovi, Kid Rock, Yo Gabba Gabba!, Big Boi, Cage the Elephant, Candlebox, Theory of a Deadman, Marcy Playground, and many others. Music is a major part of my life, and I remember being surrounded by it at an early age. Read More

Jazz Scales: The Bebop Scale

...talks about practicing the bebop scale in fast successive repetitions (what he calls jazz calisthenics), but he also explains several techniques that are directly related to the scale. He goes over how to effectively use the bebop scale starting on any chord tone, using arpeggiations to extend the scale, as well as techniques called enclosures and deflections. But not only that, he even provides extensive listening examples relevant to these bebop scale techniques.   The point of this article, however, is to simply introduce you to the bebop scale and give you reasons why it’s useful and relevant in jazz music, so you can do... 5 Reasons Why You Should Take Summer Music Lessons

...simply too hot to do anything outside between mid-June and late August. Hanging out indoors in close proximity to central air, an A/C window unit or even a rotating fan during scorchingly hot summer weather is an ideal time to focus on learning a new instrument or for sharpening your skills on an instrument you’ve been playing for a while.   When it’s too hot to be outside, focusing on music is a great way to be productive with your time. How many summer days have you spent firmly embedded into your couch watching awful daytime television? This summer, try ... Read More

Saxophone Reed Strength

...a step back to a softer reed is a good move. It’s also possible that you got a new mouthpiece with a wider tip opening, and the reed strength you’ve been playing is now too hard in combination. Just remember, there will be an adjustment period when changing reed strengths, but it will be worth it in the long-term. Conclusion The ultimate goal, when it comes to reeds, is finding the reed that makes you forget completely about reeds. You want to find a reed that gets in the way the least, that is the least limiting. You already have to deal ... Read More

Hey Joe Chords: Putting CAGED Into Practice

...  Open-String Major Chords in the style of “Hey Joe” The Hey Joe chords progression uses the CAGED chords in the following order: C-G-D-A-E. Each chord receives two beats, except the E chord which receives eight beats (or two bars). Take a look at the example below and you’ll see a chord chart that illustrates this in a typical way that musicians notate music.         Begin with quarter-note strums:         Then add eighth-note strums:         Finally, mix quarter-note and eighth-note strums:       There’s also a backing track for you to practice with. Have fun! ... Read More
