I have taught guitar since high school. I have had a ranging experience from teaching middle schoolers, to high schoolers, to adults. With each student, I assess where they are with their knowledge of the instrument, as well as how far their passion for music goes. In high school, I simply taught the fundamentals of the guitar as I knew it, making sure that my students played guitar correctly. As a guitar teacher, I like to start with getting the student accustomed with each string, including how to tune a guitar and how to play different notes on each string. Next, I start teaching chords by starting with E minor and then moving as little as possible with the fingers so the student can understand the relation between certain chords. Every student works at their own pace and I allow for a lot of flexibility in my lessons. However, once the student has communicated their long term goals for the guitar, realistic goals are set between each lesson. I assign projects to work on between each lessons usually a mix of technical practice, such as left hand and right hand techniques, and musical works the student is interested in.
