I do teach through lesson books but I've always found that they're better used as a guide rather than the focus of every lesson. I approach teaching with starting with a solid foundation for beginners. Starting each lesson with some warm-up exercises to help develop the dexterity and coordination playing the guitar demands. Then we start learning chord structure and scales, starting with the major and minors.
