I believe that music students are not "one size fits all", so I create an individual approach catered to each student's strengths, weaknesses, and interests. For beginners, I typically start with the very basics such as putting the instrument together(if applicable), posture/form, and fingerings. Then, I will cater my teaching materials to the student and their situation, which sometimes means the majority of their work is print materials. Read More
Instruments: Guitar Drums Bass Guitar Acoustic Guitar
My teaching experience dates back to 1990, when, while homeschooling my children, I taught drums and guitar as part of their curriculum. Since then I have given lessons on a part time basis. Through my experience, I have become skillful in identifying a student's strengths, weaknesses and learning style. My focus is on challenging students at their current skill level while encouraging them and making the process of learning fun. I work with students to identify their personal goals and work with them to identify practical steps towards reaching those goals. Read More
Instruments: Piano Saxophone Flute Clarinet Ukulele
For the Clarinet, I typically use The Hendrickson Method book series with supplemental books on the side to enhance their various levels. For flute and saxophone, I will evaluate based on the student's level. Once I have established a method book, I incorporate solos and additional techniques. I also encourage the students to bring music from their band class and/or other solos they may be working on for festivals, competitions, or auditions. Read More
Instruments: Bass Guitar Double Bass Keyboard Electric Guitar
I gave my first lesson when I was a sophomore in College, and during college I gave weekly lessons to about 5 students, each of different skill levels. During my time with these students I noticed that what I really enjoyed about teaching them was their passion for their instrument. I have also noticed that I would learn something from each student regardless of their level of musicianship, whether it be the recomendation of a new band or something that I picked up from their thought process when learning, such as how they go about learning a new concept or what they listen when they try to figure out the characteristics of a new groove or genre. Instruments: Guitar Trumpet Trombone Ukulele
I start with the end in mind. Once your student has established clear, realistic goals with me, all the focus is on reaching those goals. It is also made clear that it is the student's responsibility to come into each lesson showing clear evidence that they've practiced the music. I'm stern about this. If the student hasn't put in the time, I will send the student home mid-lesson and they lose that lesson. Read More
Instruments: Piano Guitar Bass Guitar Banjo Ukulele Mandolin
My approach to teaching is to make lessons fun and enjoyable in a comfortable and relaxed setting to allow the student fullconcentration on each lesson. But, also to provide the necessary guidance and encouragement to challenge and motivate students to improve and develop natural strengths and new skills. I have a good selection of method books and materials to fit each student's level of musicianship and choice of playing style(s) to extend upon their interests and goals. Read More
