A beautiful sound is the beginning of the creation of beautiful music! I find it most important to do work on a student's sound in the beginning stages of playing. To achieve the foundations of a good sound, playing pitches (beginning with A on alto) on the mouthpiece alone will develop the student's sound from the beginning as well as lay the foundations for a good embouchure. Doing this brings awareness to the students use of air by showing him/her the muscules used within and around the oral cavity in order to produce an optimal sound on the saxophone without developing bad habits that could be detrimental to a student's health. To me, nothing is more satisfying then problem solving and that is what these lessons are. I help find the roadblock in the way of your student learning, and I give them the tools to fix it. As they practice more and more, they will start to figure out there own ways to fix issues. I have been performing and teaching music privately in the Philadelphia area since I graduated with a Music education degree in 1991. I have performed on my instruments in a variety of venues (such as television, cruise ships, clubs, musical theater, and outdoor concerts) and styles. I aim to teach my students the difference between "playing the trumpet" and "making music" and how this distinction is applied to practice. "Playing the trumpet" is a physically demanding task that requires diligent, often tedious practice to become skilled at. "Making music", on the other hand, can be done by anyone at any skill level and is lots of fun. The goal of practicing the trumpet is to become so familiar with the instrument that it becomes an extension of our body and mind, as effortless and automatic to perform as breathing or walking.
