Music has been a passion of mine from age 6. I got my start playing the piano with friends trying to figure out the music from Super Mario 64. Not a day has gone by since then that I haven't picked up an instrument of some kind. It's been a goal of mine to learn as many instruments as possible throughout my life and focus on the instruments I love. I've been able to learn the piano, organ, all kinds of guitars, clarinet, oboe, saxophone, bassoon, trumpet, trombone, percussion instruments, and vocals. Read More

I always try to develop, in the student, the passion for music. Whether it is the student who seeks to play professionally or the child who wishes to be musicalized. I believe that musical theory must always be studied in a practical way, or else it is empty and useless. After all, it is through experience and practice that we learn in a true, learning this which can last for many years. Read More

I have been playing the piano since I was 7 years old. That's been 45 (yes) I said (45) years ago! I'm old. I'm married and have four adult children. I have a crazy cat named Lady. She rolls around like a dog. I love to crochet, knit and machine embroider and other hand crafts in my free time. I love to read. At this point in time Brandon Sanderson is my favorite author. I've also found that a combination of classical and modern music can go a long way in helping students enjoy the piano and motivate them to practice and continue to learn. If a student isn't having fun in their lessons, then I'm not doing my job! Music is fun! My students are encouraged to enter competitions and recitals, as well as work on composing their own original material, so they can feel good about their accomplishments and stay motivated to learn. Instruments: Piano Violin Keyboard
I approach piano and violin instruction from a foundational, constructive perspective, combined with building rapport and reciprocal clarifying communications. Essentially this means that the student and I interact to build understanding by using the familiar to grasp the unfamiliar. An example is: When teaching hand position, I use the natural position the student already has when the hand is relaxed to build the hand playing position. The student is encouraged to ask questions, to feel free to make mistakes in order to take the risks necessary for true understanding and growth, and to engage in productive discussion leading to personal clarity with regard to their playing. What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
I think that it is important to figure out your trouble spots immediately. If there is a section that is difficult to play in your music, stop and take a moment to figure out why it is difficult. Once the problem has been identified, work to find ways to stop the problem. Many of these problems can be resolved by relaxing the body and more importantly the wrist, taking the passage slower, and playing it multiple times - both hands alone then together. Play the passage in different rhythms, fast and slow, and with different wrist techniques. This will increase your ability to play it up to tempo, currently.
Why did you choose your primary instrument?
I started playing the piano when I was three. My mom started teaching me at such a young age. I honestly don't even remember my life without the piano in it. Because of this, I have always played the piano and I will never stop. It brings me such joy to find a piece of music that I love and working on it until it is perfect! I chose to continue with piano because it relaxes me. It is my hobby. It is the thing that I do when I am having a bad day. I love sitting down at a piano and sight reading a new book of music. Playing the piano is what brings me joy.
What is your favorite style/genre of music to play and why?
I love playing music from the Romantic Period. I think that the composers during this period wrote incredibly beautiful music. I love the flowing style of pieces from this era. I also love to play more contemporary music. I think that the chords and styles used in this music is very exciting. There are so many different ways that a piece from this style can be played. I believe that it is important to have fun playing your music. I love to listen to different recordings and see how the performer played that piece and then put my own personal touch on the piece as well.
Does music run in your family? Tell us a little about your musical family members.
I grew up in an extremely musical family. My mom teaches piano and has a piano studio of over 65 piano students. I can't remember a time where my mom wasn't teaching piano. I have three siblings. When each of us turned eight we got to choose a second instrument that we wanted to play. I chose to play the cello. Two of my siblings play the violin while the other plays the viola. We had a string quartet growing up. We have performed at several different events, with my mom accompanying us on the piano. We each play the piano and have loved getting to play together. We especially love the holidays when we get to play music together.
