I think my approach to teaching piano is highly individualized. What motivates one student will not necessarily motivate another. Brief example: I currently have a student who likes to give me really "hard" high-fives after he has accomplished something. While he is adorable and he will work really hard to give me that high-five; this wouldn't work on many other students. Whatever will inspire my student to practice is what I will provide whether that is praise or stickers. Read More

At the beginning I will test the students on how much they know and what they like to play(soundtracks, gospel songs, songs out of the hymnal, classical etc). I start every lesson with positive and a little bit of chit chat to see how everything in their life is going. In the past, I have used several different band methods and generally like to first use the book that the students' school district is using. As the student becomes more accomplished, I supplement with method books and solo literature from the repertoire of the individual instrument. For the younger student, additionally, I like to work with improvising and making up his/her own songs, so that they enjoy and develop a sense of accomplishment in composing their own music. Ever since I was a child I had wanted to be a teacher. When I got to Central Piedmont Community College I focused on music education because I knew I wanted to teach music theory in college. After transferring to Wingate University I began studying choral music education because I was fascinated byhow the voice works and blends with other voices in a choir situation. I have had the opportunity to study rock bass, jazz bass, classical guitar, piano, and even private voice lessons from private lessons all the way up through college level lessons and these lessons have given me such a drive and passion for not only music, but music education.
