I began teaching private music lessons a decade ago as an undergraduate music student. Working at a community music school, I volunteered to teach piano lessons and lead the choir. I fell in love with teaching and after receiving my Bachelors of Music in Vocal Performance, I began teaching private lessons and directing the commercial vocal ensemble at Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville. I like to start beginning students with a combination of sheet music and by rote teaching. If a student comes to me with method books or other materials, we will start with those and I will suggest other materials as appropriate. I often have more advanced students work through various scales books and Rose etudes, and whatever other type of music interests them. I utilize duets often in lessons to work on sight reading and blend, tuning, and leadership. Read More

I have played the violin for eleven years, and have a Bachelor's degree in philosophy. I studied biochemistry until taking a semester to study violin with Barbara Gorzynska in Vienna, after which I found an interest in the processes of learning and authentic relationships to one's activity. This time abroad was certainly a large influence on my teaching style, as I learned a great deal about the violin for one, but moreso was my education in philosophy. Read More

I have been offering music education since 2009, where I have had the luxury to work, learn and play with students, other fellow musicians and experience music education in a variety of environments and platforms whether in person or via the internet. I am a self-taught musician, beginning at Edgewood College, where I served as the pianist in the Jazz Ensemble. After college, I had the opportunity to play professionally for several years; as the pianist in the Jeff Peronto Jazz Orchestra (Big Band) and also was the pianist for a period of time with Madison, WI Jazz Club "Cafe' Coda" owner, Hanah Jon Taylor in the Hanah Jon Taylor Artet (Jazz Combo). By day, I am the high school and middle school Choral Director, General Music Teacher, and Voice Lesson Teacher at Mineral Point. By night, I serve as the Musical Theatre Director at the school, and offer private vocal lessons. I was an Adjunct Instructor of non-major voice lessons at NYU Steinhardt for three years, and an independent lesson teacher in the NYC metro area. I have had the opportunity to work for Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp (late-elementary, middle, and high school aged campers) in a variety of positions, including Voice Faculty, Choir Minor Teacher, Unit Director, and Counselor. For beginning students, I usually start by creating a strong foundation in the student's mind of why they want to learn how to play an instrument and what goals, if any, they initially have for themselves. I then utilize this to help create individual based lesson plans that are driven by the inner workings of the student's mind. I incorporate music theory into every instrument at every skill level because I believe it to be something that is extremely important to understand and that not a lot of students are exposed to before they get to college. Music lessons were one of my favorite activities growing up and continue to be for me as an adult. I want to give my students the same joy that I have for music, regardless of what their goals are. In the first lesson, I ask every new student what their goals area. That is how we start working together. For instance, if I know that a student is hoping to audition for a school production in a few months, I want to make sure that I include performance preparation in our lesson. Read More
