I like to first access the student and their proficiency level. Once I discover your weak points I focus on them and drill them to perfection. Once we have those down. When it comes to drills/exercises/scales/etc., I try to use challenging pieces to substitute for them as much as possible. This makes practice more enjoyable, and gives the student more pieces (as opposed to exercises) to play for family and friends while still building on their skills and keeping them challenged. While students will find that their progress is influenced by their practice habits, it's also my goal to make clear what effective practice looks like, what kinds of questions they might ask to figure things out, and how to be patient with themselves. For beginner students who are children, I tend to lean into the music that they are more fond of listening to and develop an atmosphere of interest while using various colors, singing methods, rhymes that will grasp their attention and in the long run develop their ear.
