Music has always been my number 1 passion, and I have taught private music lessons since I was in high school.  Since graduating with my Master's degree in 2011, I have become a certified music teacher for grades K-12.  I modify all lessons depending on the student to best suite the students needs and prepare them for the maximum learning experience.  Read More

For beginning students, what I start with generally depends on what instrument they play, but in general, I use various "Essentials" books. As the student progresses past the fundamentals of music and playing their instrument, I will move on to more advanced or technical musical exercises, as well as solo repertoire if the student is looking to perform for a recital, NYSSMA, etc. My teaching style for older, more advanced students is relatively the same, excluding the "Essentials" and fundamentals. Learning. It has to be fun. Case in point: I usually select repertoire’ that is conducive to the students learning but often out of their safety zone. The student usually responds quite favorably to new genre’, but if they don’t, we move on to another song that won’t just help them learn, but will be fun or enjoyable for them to learn. Enjoy the process and the learning will happen organically. Read More

I am a veteran of the teaching profession. I graduated from S.C.S.U. in 1986 and I have been instructing students in many capacities since that time. Some attributes I bring to my profession are a calm, understanding demeanor and a passion for helping my students achieve their individual goals. My motivation for remaining in this profession for this length of time is the benefit I pass to my students. Read More

I create custom lesson plans graded to progressively build the student's confidence, introducing something new at each lesson. If students fall in love with a piece well beyond their current capability, I don't usually say no; instead, I help them master the challenges step by step. I require students to learn scales; however, I avoid most technical method books. Instead, I invent exercises based on the challenges of a particular piece. Read More

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Start out small. Don't just practice the easy stuff, or the songs you already know. Set a timer for a realistic amount of practice time; maybe just 10-15mins at first. Record yourself running through songs or exercises and listen back taking notes. Also, always keep a practice log to write down what you're working on, as well as your goals! I think that listening productively to music you want to learn is also practicing, as well as working on music with other musicians. Try to constantly improve and practice consistently!

How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
I LOVE teaching all ages, including young beginners. I think there's something really special about introducing an instrument or sound to a child. Does your child want to get involved in their school or community musically? Are they looking for a hobby or an outlet? Music shaped who I was when I was young, and led to many life-long friendships. I think your child is ready to start lessons if they have access to an instrument, and have access to music listening sources (iPods, youtube, speakers, school concerts, etc..)

When will I start to see results?
As soon as you get your bearings on an instrument (knowing where hands go, how to produce a sound) you can start to see results. If you practice a few minutes daily, and listen to music you're passionate about your playing will grow exponentially! My goal is for a student to learn a song they like after the first two lessons, along with learning how to practice and learn songs on their own! After a couple months, I aim for students to be at an intermediate level, reading music, learning songs, and hopefully loving their instrument more than ever before.

Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
I was a lucky kid when it came to teachers. At a young age, I was introduced to the piano and guitar by my father and the cello by a school teacher, Ms.Bonds. Their support and encouragement led me to art schools, the bass, and more influential teachers. By the time I was in high school, I knew music was the path for me. I fully believe that that was possible because of my inspiring teachers. They taught me technique, showed me music, and introduced me to other learning musicians. They showed me that music was cool, and the music community was even cooler.

Why did you choose your primary instrument?
Bass is my primary instrument (although I've been playing guitar for just as long). I picked the bass, because it was needed in my school band. My teacher asked if any students wanted to switch from cello to bass, and I decided to give it a go. As soon as I plucked the strings, I knew I wanted to be a bass player. I loved how the bass was used in every genre of music, and that it could help me understand jazz, classical, and rock music better. The bass taught me about the roles different instruments take in the band, and how to make a song better.
