I first began teaching in high school at the suggestion of my own piano teacher. I loved the experience from the start - few things are more rewarding than watching a student develop their musical passion and skill from lesson to lesson. For begining students who are under the age of thirteen, I prefer to start with Bastien's Piano Basics. This series comes with four different books (Technic, Piano, Performance, and Theory) that give the student a well rounded lesson. For students over the age of thirteen, I like to use Alfred's Basic Piano Course. This series has a more mature song selection, a variety of genres, includes music theory, and has piano excercises. Having played professionally since the age of 18, I bring a solid professional ethic, traditional technique and boundless enthusiasm to both playing and teaching Double Bass. Having traveled extensively and toured with The Smothers Brothers and Phylis Diller, I can provide insight into the practical aspects of performance and practice routines. Although I encourage the mastery of traditional Double Bass technique with the bow, I love to encourage and assist students in a variety of styles and idioms, including Orchestral Bass, Jazz, Country and Bluegrass. My teaching style is based on an open system, which allows the student to express their ideas and concerns about the topics covered in each lesson, in order to build the educational strategy that can best benefit the student. As an professor, the educational development of each student will always be a priority, but as a musician I recognize that there are activities that can facilitate this work, such as collaborations between different students to perform chamber music, collaborations between the student and the teacher to play musical duos during lessons, among other activities that keep the student interested and curious at all times. For teaching children I use a mix of method books (Hal Leonard and Mel Bay) and playing chords and songs so that while the student grows with fundamental information, they also have fun and play songs they know and can relate to. Once the student progesses past basic method books and can play basic songs, I move to teaching scales up and down the neck in the interest of improvising and/or more advanced songs and playing styles depending on the interest/directoin of the student.
