As a teacher, I will also be a coach to encourage the student to learn rudimentary and theory basics. These will be foundational for development as the student matures. Tactically, lessons will consist of playing for understanding. I look forward to a student questions as it is key for the overall learning process. In some cases, I will have to do some homework for the student!   I believe this combination of style and method provides a strong format to give the student a satisfying and confident background a music career as a soloist or to jump in on jam sessions and perform with others. I have been teaching privately part time for the past 4 years working with students in grades K-12. My main goal in lessons is for my students to not only succeed at a new skill once, but to be confident in their ability to repeat their success in practice at home and at our next lessons. I encourage positive feedback and positive "self-talk" as a means of boosting self-efficacy. I think an important part of learning is goal setting and outlining specific, achievable steps to reach that goal so that progress can be tracked and the process of learning can become less ambiguous. Beginners need to learn to crawl before they can rock but everything learned will be for a definite purpose and not just because that’s how it’s always been done. Although I am classically trained and have extensive orchestral experience as a violinist and violist, I was a founding member of an Irish group and several early music ensembles, performed with folk and classical guitarists, and played in a rock and roll nightclub band.I continue to play in many churches and synagogues, do strolling violin work, perform jazz standards, and act as lead violin in an internationally acclaimed big band. In addition to being a member of several active local projects, I have performed with the Seattle Symphony; UW faculty members Bill Frisell, Cuong Vu, Luke Bergman, Ted Poor, and Marc Seales; several Cornish faculty members including Jim Knapp, Jovino Santos Neto, and Wayne Horvitz; and celebrated NYC-based players Wynton Marsalis, Tim Berne, Ralph Alessi, and Andrew D'Angelo.
