I like to teach students a few easy chords to get them started. Hundreds of songs can be play with only 3 chords. I also like to teach students some 2-note chords also called power chords. Rock and roll and blues are often played with power chords. I find that students can begin playing some common rock and blues rhythms only after a few lessons. Read More

For adults, I would continue using these books but at a higher level with supplemental material on the side, which may include solo repertoire appropriate for them and Hanon's Virtuoso Pianist exercises (a few, not all). For voice students, I try to find out what it is they are interested in singing; I am comfortable with all genres but it should be noted that I am classically trained and can work more easily and comfortably for those wanting to sing classical music, musical theater, and church related music. A student must enjoy what they are working on in order to progress. Read More

-Practicing is important, but the most essential way to improve is to USING THE CORRECT METHOD TO PRACTICE. -A wrong way to practice the piano might lead a dead end no matter how long you spend on the piano, but a good method will cost you less than half the energy to yield the best result in piano playing. -I use the simplest and correct methods to help you play the piano, which was discovered and summarized by my piano knowledge and experience combined with my professors' guideline which was from the Juilliard School, New England Conservatory and the Jacobs School of Music. My main music philosophy is to teach sound before sight: teach students to hear the music, and then read the notation. For beginners, I want them to become well acquainted with their instrument so I begin with the basic fundamentals, and then teach some traditional tunes before moving on to reading music. For students who can already read music, I like to work on sight-reading as well as finding solo repertoire that can be performed at recitals. Read More

Music has been a passion of mine my entire life. I started piano at the age of 4, flute at the age of 10, and sang throughout. I have enjoyed performing in many venues from coffee shops to churches to big music halls; functions from weddings and funerals to special dinners; and just for fun with family and friends. My undergraduate degree from Wheaton College is a Bachelor of Music with a concentration in Psychology, and my Masters is in Music Education. Read More

For young beginning students, I really like to emphasize the fundamentals using whatever book the student uses for their band class. Once they get a good grasp on the fundamentals, then I start to introduce some solo repertoire appropriate to their skill level. For students who are older, I like to find out what area of the trumpet they want to improve on and structure our lessons to try and improve on those areas, as well as incorporate other fundamentals and solo repertoire. I try to make the lessons as fun as possible and geared towards what the student wants to learn. Read More

I certainly have adopted the teaching styles of my previous and current instructors, each bringing a unique approach to teaching an instrument. Patience and understand is crucial with any students, and there needs to be a lot of fun and excitement within a lesson, otherwise, what is the point? Now, fun and excitement must also be met with serious practice time and great concentration during a lesson. My objective is to create a comfortable environment fertile for learning, while at the same time having my students know there are skills to refine and concepts to solidify. Read More
