I began teaching guitar at 16 for several local music stores in the Baltimore metro area, and quickly took to working with a wide range students in a short period of time. The passion I developed for teaching the instrument at a young age pushed me to further branch out, and begin offering private lessons from my home studio several years later. For young beginners, I start off with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, as they are probably already working in this book if they are in bad at school.  Outside of that, I'll typically incorporate key beginning excercises from the Arban's Book to help develop the students sound and chops.  This was how my first teacher taught me, and I found his methods extremely helpful in my early years.  Once they're fundamentals are developed, I will begin to work on the students first recital. I encourage a regular practice schedule but also aknoledge the realities of other commitments outside of music. For children I mix method structure and 'fun' music (pop songs, kids' songs, TV show themes) so as to keep them interested and engaged without a struggle. In addition to a 'custom' approach, I have a curriculum that I follow to make sure every student gets all the basics and consistency in intermediate and advanced educationI have coached students through auditions into school bands, through music theater productions and though auditions for bands and taught them how to excel when placed in all the aforementioned positions. My teaching experience goes back to my undergraduate days, where I had plenty of field teaching opportunities as well as student teaching. My clarinet professor gave me opportunities to help out with teaching the Woodwind Methods classes at USM for more pedagogical experience. In grad school, I taught make-up lessons to undergraduate students, coached chamber ensembles, and taught lessons to non-majors.
