With a beginner student, I start with the basics. We learn how to properly hold the instrument and how to tune the strings. From there, the students will learn the fundamentals of finger placement and basic strumming. Once the student feels comfortable, we start to learn different chords and scales. At this point, students will begin learning songs with basic chords. I consider myself to be both traditional and old school at certain times, however. I firmly believe that students will lose interest in music quickly if I always teach all students the same techniques and follow conventional music theory. For piano lessons I usually begin without any books until they are comfortable with the weight and the feel of the piano keys. I have always aspired to be a versatile drummer. Growing up I idolized drummers like Steve Gadd, Steve Jordan, Dennis Chambers, and many of the jazz and latin greats. I learned how to play many styles of music along the way including: jazz, soul, funk, rock, pop, blues, salsa, samba, candombe, afro-beat, reggae, symphonic percussion, and the avante garde. I am a composer and performer rooted in Elkridge, Maryland. I write music in many genres and styles for a variety of performers and different ensembles, typically specializing in repertoire for small chamber ensembles. I am as comfortable conceiving of works for two clarinets as I am crafting a piece out of cat meows and synthesized bird sounds. My music has been featured at UMBC and Howard Community College, with performances by the UMBC Chamber Players, UMBC New Music Ensemble, and the UMBC Gamelan. Read More
