I have spent the past three years teaching group and individual lessons in pop and classical guitar as part of my graduate studies at Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music. This means I have taught college-aged students exclusively, up to this point. However, I am completely open to teaching students of all ages. I cater my teaching and methods to each individual student and his/her needs and goals. For beginners, I often use Hal Leonard’s Essential Elements. After progressing past that, the Rubank books and Hite etudes work for many students. Starting around 8th grade, I introduce solo repertoire appropriate to their level. During lessons, I always have students work on some form of scale, sight-reading, and ear training. I have several duet books (and a Disney book!) that students love to sight-read from. Read More

This is the most difficult part of drumming. If I can teach a student this, then I can teach them anything. The advanced that can already hold a steady beat, I like to develop runs and fills on the drums. I can take them into a deeper understanding of how fills can take a song to the next level. I want to instill a passion for music in my piano students. To do this, I let each student progress at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lession and acknowledging the small accomplishments. With younger beginning saxophone students I start them with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements book 1. This Provides a great foundation for students to start on and benefits in the long run. For mid range skill level students we start with (depending upon skill) the Rubank beginning or intermediate method book. This provides a lot of melodic material for them to grow as a musician. Lastly, for the advanced we would start with Ferling Etudes which really challenge the student at a higher level. Read More

The art form of music is both a cerebral and deepy visceral experience. And thus so I invite students to journey outward and inward to begin (or continue) studying music from both a scholastic perspective as well as treating the art form as a purely aural experience. My teaching studio enables students to take home recordings of themselves so they have an audible track record of their progress.
