Nothing is more rewarding than passing the knowledge of music to my students. It truly is an invaluable gift to have the experience and feeling that playing music gives to a person. The student will carry this with them the rest of life and that truly inspires me to push my students to find their own voice on their instrument. My experience goes back to High School when I would give casual tutoring sessions to friends. In college I started teaching lessons in theory and composing/songwriting. I like to encourage students to get on a practicing schedule especially for younger students as it helps them get more interested in the instrument. I like to start with modern pop/rock styles to get the student interested in the instrument then mix in Jazz so we can talk about more complex theory and also mix in a little classical so we can talk about technique and form. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with teaching basic music theory, scales, and start with John Thompson's Easiest Piano Course for the piano students. For Cello beginning students, it's very important to have a correct playing position. Therefore, we will spend some time on knowing cello, position for both hands, and then we will start with Suzuki. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. Read More
