We start by doing proper warm up exercises followed by learning or practicing rudiments. We work on our grip of the sticks and our movements while drumming. In other words, I teach economy of movement for maximum energy. If a student is flailing their arms, we talk about a more fluid movement by utilizing the wrists and incorporating finger control. Then we move on to reading out of instructional books which is then followed by practical application on the drum sets.With a beginner student I find Basix Syncopation for Drums by Alfred Publishing to be a very effective tool. Under the Festival's auspices, Mr. L. performed the roles of Le fauteuil in L'enfant et les sortilèges, Don Quixote in de Falla's El retablo de maese Pedro, Jack Rance in La fanciulla del West (all under the maestro's baton), and Mercutio in Roméo et Juliette. Concert appearances with Maestro Maazel include Mr. L's role debut as Jack Rance at Spain's Palacio de la Ópera de A Coruña and his Roman debut as the baritone soloist in Brahms' Ein deutsches Requiem with the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana at Rome's historic Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. I tend to edit my teaching style based on how successfully my students meet their goals. I honestly love teaching young and beginning students because they're an absolute blank slate, something I do not take lightly. Having fun and establishing a strong practice routine is paramount with younger students. I emphasize listening to records/music with all students but especially with more intermediate to advanced students.
