I am an acoustic percussive guitarist currently working in the greater Washington D.C. Metropolitan area. I have been teaching guitar almost as long as I've been playing guitar, starting with just friends and family but eventually moving on to support myself as a private instructor. I have apprenticed with UDC Jazz Band Guitarist Pete Muldoon and Matt Kelley (of the blues band "Big Boy Little"). I have been teaching music for over 15 years. My lessons are very specific and similar in structure and format. Regardless of which direction the student wishes to take their musical development, a foundation of classical training is mandatory. I teach classical piano and flute but have opened up the lessons to include pop, rock and jazz on occasion. I am patient yet strict. In my experience I have found that it is most effective to teach students in a one-on-one setting. When others are involved in the lesson it can cause a student to become self conscious and therefore effects their progress. It is important for the student to begin with a defined goal so that progress can be measured. When the student sees their progress they maintain enthusiasm in pursuit of the goal. Read More

Steve is originally from the Binghamton, NY area and began studying drums at the age of 12 with local jazz musician Tony Monforte. He participated in the All State Orchestra and was placed on the Pro-Mark Honor Roll for young, up-and-coming drummers. Steve received a Bachelors of Music in Jazz Studies from Ithaca College in Ithaca, NY where he studied with Gordon Stout, Steve Brown, and Robert Bridge. He was selected to participate in the Henry Mancini Institute where he worked with some of the leading jazz, film, and classical musicians and composers from around the world including Terence Blanchard, Bud Shank, Christian McBride, and Jerry Goldsmith. For younger students I usually recommend a method book or I make copies from my own library for the student.  I usually will teach fundamentals through a book, but I always look for opportunities to convey musical principles in a more natural way, and especially for kids, fun is the most important method there is.  Often times a student will stumble upon something interesting unintentionally and I use these moments to teach, because it both encourages them to recognize their natural talent and helps the student to make connections from their limited technical skills to greater conceptual knowledge.
