As well as learn songs and do theory/aural exercises from the Faber books, I like to use online music theory games for my students to practice skills like note identification. I think that students learn best when they are relaxed and having fun.  So, anything I can do to keep it light - whether it's drawing a picture to make a point or making up silly words to learn a complex rhythm or using crayons to mark the sections in our music - is a win in my book!  Laughing and making mistakes are a big part of learning.  When my students make errors, I don't scold, I say "good for you, now we can learn something!" My teaching style is fully interactive. As a teacher of both music and computers, I was never a dictatorial teacher. Other teachers, even young ones, that everyone was up and around. Talking to each other. Some listening to music. Whatever style fits the learner. You cannot "cheat" in music performance. Either you can do it or you cannot. I have played trumpet since the 4th grade and I played throughout high school, college up to today. I sang and played in multiple ensembles throughout my schooling career. For children I tend to teach songs by The Beatles as standard curriculum, as well as learning to read music proficiently. The things tend to be non-negotiable unless the parent informs me otherwise. For teens and pre-teens reading music is optional as well as the types of songs you wish to learn or the theory you wish to learn. That's just a general overview, along the way we learn all types of riffs, vamps, chords, scales, etc., to which we follow my standard development method, but never neglecting your own personal interests in music. From the first lesson, proper bow technique is emphasized, helping the student get a pleasing sound in the first lesson.
