In 2018, I graduated from Oklahoma City University with a double Bachelor of Music degree in Music Theatre and Vocal Performance. For younger students with no sight reading experience, I will typically start of with Ted Reed's book Syncopation. This book starts the student off with a very basic music notation vocabulary. This vocabulary is often quickly absorbed so that the student may proceed to more complicated musical words or phrases. When a student has got the basics down, I will begin to teach them songs of their choosing and recommend songs to learn. For more intermediate to advanced students, I will find their passion and see what they want to play. I will work to inspire them and get them to perform as much as possible. From Newbreed to Chapin to Afro-Cuban Rhythm for drum set, there are many methods that are worth exploring. That being said, sometimes learning songs (covers) can be the best way to learn quickly and it can be a lot of fun. Something I've done many times too is writing precise exercises for students in order to address and target specific needs. Let's say a student has difficulty with his ghost notes on his/her left hand, I can easily come up with fun exercises in order to speed up the progress and get improvements for that student. Read More
