My methods are to introduce an easy-to-understand base in music theory and applied music by explaining it based on how the music makes us feel. For beginners who are children, I begin with the essential topics such as how to hold the instrument and how to play simple scales and exercises. Once they are ready, we can begin introducing simple songs and chords that teach the fundamentals in a fun and engaging way. Read More

For beginning students, I like to use the Suzuki Cello School books, approximately up to book 6. Then, I move to solo repertoire that is appropriate for the student and their musical goals. I like to use the Ivan Galamian Scale System for Violoncello. I also use the Yampolsky Violoncello technique book. For more technique exercises, I use the Feuillard Daily Exercises and assign exercises based on where the student needs improvement. Read More

My teaching style is very diagnostic and understanding. I love seeing my students explore their interests in music and giving them the tools to succeed in the process. I do believe it is my job as a teacher to ensure the student is enjoying what they are doing! Lessons need to be fun but at the same time the student needs to feel like they're making real progress. What I do is slow down whatever we're working on to a manageable pace for the student then slowly speed things up in a way that is comfortable for the student while at the same time providing new challenges and goals for the student to work toward.
