I have been singing ever since I can remember and started taking lessons at the age of 7. My vocal studies brought me to complete my Masters degree in Vocal Performance at UNCG. Though the focus of my degree was Opera, I am practiced in many different genres of music. My classical education has given me a thorough understanding of the vocal instrument and allowed me to healthily, comfortably, and with ease be able to branch out into a variety of different genres. My teaching style is kind, respectful, nurturing, and encouraging while also demanding. My greatest pleasure and joy in teaching is when I see and hear the student make obvious progress. A trust is built, both initially and over time, where the student and teacher understand the balance between fun and serious study. For students of all ages and skill sets I first like to establish a personalized daily routine of fundamental exercises such as long tones, lip slurs, tone production and articulation if not already had. I use the Bill Adam approach to teaching my establishing a strong core understanding and playing of the instrument. I believe in training students both as instrumentalists and as overall musicians. Thus, beginning cello students will start with the Suzuki method to get basic technique down. Then, as a student improves, solo repertoire will be introduced from both the Suzuki method and other sources. Once a student has reached a state of proficiency, I will cater my teaching instead to the style that the student prefers. We can continue in classical music, or transition to contemporary styles. The more familiar the student is with the instrument the easier it is for them to be more confident in their performance. I encourage my students to perform in recitals and to compete as well as be apart of a band program as well. It is a great way to make wonderful friends. When in the field of Music Education, I do adhere strenuously to the Standards set forth by The Education Dept, which gives a clear understanding as to what they are supposed to learn during the Grade they have achieved. My lessons and objective come from those guidelines. I will not often deviate from it, although I will use my own discretion in determining how to meet the Standard.
