I assign method books, etudes (studies), and repertoire appropriate for the playing level of the student. My teaching emphasizes fundamentals first for students of every level. This fundamental study supports students in their pursuit of their musical and artistic goals. The method books I recommend students begin with are in the Rubank series, either Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced. Etudes to supplement will be the Cavally Melodious and Progressive studies. I am a high-energy, working professional singer with 15+ years of performance experience and 10+ years of vocal teaching/coaching at your service! I received a Masters of Music in Voice from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) and a Bachelors of Music from DePauw University. For beginning students, I usually prefer to use the Suzuki method, as this is the method I grew up on, and I prefer to teach the knowledge that I find useful in the method. However, my lessons are not solely based on my preference, as I identify individual strengths and weaknesses and target those in the sessions. Step by step, you will learn so much after using Suzuki method for a while. This method gives you a musical environment, and it can make the cello become your second voice. I believe that fundamentals, as outlined above, are crucial to master for a student to truly understand their instrument. When a solid foundation has been established, it is much easier to approach those more complicated concepts. It then allows everything that a student do to become easier and truly move forward in their learning at an accelerated pace. There are as many different teaching styles as there are students. Everyone learns differently, at their own pace. I love private lessons because you can get to know the student and their learning style, and tailor the material to suit them. Its my job to motivate and help them find their own voice as a player.
