I generally rely on Hal Leonard's Essential Elements for Strings books when teaching beginners. These are great for building fundamentals on the instrument and introducing students to reading music. I supplement this with scales and the first Suzuki cello book, for an introduction to learning repertoire. As the student advances, we eventually shed the Essential Elements books in favor of various etudes books, depending on the student's needs. Once a student advances further along the Suzuki method, I ask them to explore appropriate repertoire of their choosing. Read More

Aim for 5 to 6 days of practice EVERY week. Consistency is key, even if it is only for 15 minutes! Whatever you do, make sure you practice right after your lesson AND the day following - retention will be 90%! When practicing, aim 3 times in a row flawlessly. I have been brought up with the Suzuki method of learning and recently I completed my Suzuki Teacher-Training in books 1-8. I find this method to instill the very best habits in students of all ages. The learning process for a young child is best when a parent is learning with the student. I began teaching private music lessons in college in 2003. I have been teaching lessons consistently for the last 10 years from my home studio, online, as well as traveling to the students' home. I find great pleasure in hearing a student's progress, that's why I encourage recording their practice and having a consistent practice schedule. I feel it is important to give positive reinforcement and feedback to students.
