Instruments: Guitar Flute
I combine basic method books with added improv, pop tunes etc. that grabs the students interest and expands their musical world-view. I make it fun and get them out of the comfort zone of the book, by letting go and trying new things. I may have flute students improvise on the blues, and in the process teach them about the basic 12 bar blues structure, which is the foundation for all of pop music. Read More
Instruments: Drums Mallet Percussion Orchestral Percussion Conga Latin Percussion
I have been teaching drums off and on while maintaining other work for almost 20 years. While other teachers may always say "Practice makes Perfect" I say something different. "Practice makes permanent". For me, this means that yes, if you practice something every day you will get better at it - but what if you practice it wrong! That is why I have an open call/door policy. I would much rather a student call me and say "I don't think I am doing this right" and let me re-explain something instead of them just to continue practicing it wrong - once you practice something 7 times it is usually in their for good. Instruments: Voice
I've been teaching full time for 5 years, and I am passionate about helping people unlock the full potential of their voice. Every voice is unique- it's cliche, but it's true! It's what makes singing such a powerful tool of artistry. Here's how I help along the way: Kids (Ages 8-12) We’ll build good, healthy vocal habits at a young age so kids are ready to blossom as they grow. Read More
Instruments: Clarinet
When playing clarinet, the body is an important part of the music-making process, and so I encourage students to really pay attention and get in touch with their body. I teach with an understanding that every individual is different, and so what works for me may not work for someone else, and I have a wide variety of examples and experiences to draw on in order to make sure my students understand and internalize the concepts we talk about. Instruments: Voice
First and foremost, the main end goal for me with every single one of my students in my studio is attempting to develop the same love and passion for music that I have been so lucky to develop through having enthusiastic, knowledgeable, talented instructors as well. While I would love to see some of my students pursue a degree/career in music past a few years into high school, I realize that that is a tough calling to follow, and many times people sing or perform more as a hobby than a career choice. Instruments: Piano Guitar Bass Guitar
I have taught from both the FJH and Berklee series of guitar and theory books. My lessons revolve around three parts: 1- Lessons from books of the appropriate level. We choose a book that suits the student, and there are weekly assignments from the book. 2- Theory work, usually focusing on the Blues form. My teaching of pop, rock, country, folk, etc. all goes back to the blues form. The music theory work also supports the students growing musical knowledge. 3- The student's choice of music. Read More
Instruments: Piano Voice
I have different methods for piano and voice: depending on the level of the piano student, I will use Faber method books and supplement performance pieces, technique lessons, games, theory discussions, etc. I do not use method books with voice students, although I do have a curriculum that I follow and adjust depending on the level and age of the voice student. I believe that while beginning and intermediate students continue to learn, it is important for them to practice different genres on their instrument -- this allows them to speak different musical languages, improves their understanding of style, and gives them a better context for their own gifts and interests.
