For young beginning students, I really like to emphasize the fundamentals using whatever book the student uses for their band class. Once they get a good grasp on the fundamentals, then I start to introduce some solo repertoire appropriate to their skill level. I believe that understanding harmony, structure, historical context, and musical intent of the composer, is as important as the physical training. To apply imagination within the narrative structure of music, and understand how to communicate through one’s stage presence to an audience is so important for growing artists of all ages.
