I've been teaching on some sort of basis since my senior year of high school, when I spent a semester helping the middle school I had previously attended with an upright bass after school program. After high school, my focus was primarily on getting through college, so I taught lessons here and there but not anywhere near full time. When I earned my degree, however, I had some time to begin taking on students on a more regular basis. Read More

I have been teaching since I was a senior in high school. Over the last 10 years I have come to realize that all students learn differently and all will encounter problems in different ways. Some students will overcome these challenges in a few days, others it may take a few months. I know because I was one of those students where it took a few months. I always tell my students that I will do everything I can to help them as long as I can tell they are practicing (and I will be able to tell). Read More

My teaching experience began while I was in college taking music education coursework and working as a music tutor for a local middle school band program. After graduating in 2013 I have taught more than 300 hours of private music lessons to students of all ages. I have also taught group music lessons, K-6 general music and choir for a homeschool music program in addition to music theory lessons. I love puzzling out how to relate to each student in the way that best helps them progress towards their musical goals! Read More

I always start by asking the student if he/she has any goals or upcoming performances they'd like to concentrate on. If so, we focus mainly on that goal, while also incorporating vocal exercises and other methods to continually improve the voice. Otherwise, we will start with mainly vocal exercises (which will grow in difficulty as we master the easier ones), and after a few weeks, start applying what we've learned in the exercises to some songs (usually folk songs, art songs, Broadway, occasionally some opera). I want to avoid overwhelming you with too many new skills at once. Once basic instrument skills are solid, we shift our focus to note reading. For this, I usually use the *Essential Elements* book, mastering notes on one string at a time, starting with the D and A strings. We first focus on pitch, followed by rhythm notation. For Intermediate Students The focus shifts more toward tone quality and advanced techniques such as shifting, vibrato, improving intonation, different articulations, bow strokes, and dynamics.
