For voice, I focus on proper understanding of the body and its role in singing. I combine this with a breakdown of individual skills followed by performance practice. The combination of the 2 allows there to be an understanding of the correct technique and an immediate opportunity for application. This is accompanied with homework in the form of exercises and books.For violin and piano, it is a similar process. There are many methods in voice, but my favorite teaching method is Vaccai. Its a simple and thorough method that explores intervalic reading and understanding theory, as well as classical breath training. I also teach vocal improvisation with jazz standards and allow my students to research about other styles and genres that they are curious about. The most important thing is they keep a good vocal health practice that allows them to be versatile and creative. Singing is such a personal and meditative instrument that the more time you spend understanding your voice the more you will be able to achieve. In the course of that time, I saw how much faster my students are improving and how content they are with their sound and singing. I have taught at educational institutions including; Drew University in Madison New Jersey (saxophone, improvisation, and jazz ensemble); The International School of Brooklyn teaching music to children ages 3 to 7 years utilizing the Orff method; and the Kulanu after-school enrichment program in Stamford CT, where I coached teen jazz and klezmer ensembles.
