Since beginning piano lessons myself when I was seven, I have been sharing my love of music with everyone all around me. I've been teaching lessons formally for the two years since I left college, and it has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Working with new students is always such a humbling experience, because it challenges me as a teacher to approach old problems with a fresh perspective. Read More

What I learned right away was that there was a whole lot more to this drumming stuff than I ever anticipated. Technique, rhythm, coordination, dexterity, and muscle development all eventually got in the way of the rock god of drumming that I envisioned myself to be. If it hadnt been for the teachers, coaches and mentors in my life, I would have given up long before I ever got to see the stage. Read More

From 2005-2006 I served on the faculty at Music Academy of North Carolina in Greensboro. After completing my Master's Degree, I joined the faculty at Central Piedmont Community College in 2011, where I have taught several classes including Applied Guitar, Instrumental Repertoire, History of Rock and Roll, Music Appreciation, and Fundamentals of Theory. In addition to my position at CPCC I also serve on the music faculty teaching applied guitar at Davidson College. Read More

I had two girls who loved to act and really wanted to be in the musical but had never sung a note. We worked every day after school for two weeks before auditions. I ended up casting them as Cinderella's Stepsisters. Their song was nominated for a Jester Award (astate-wide theatre awards program for Kansas High Schools) forBest Production Number. Their reaction when they heard was priceless. I enjoy getting to know my students and understand how their brains work. Read More

I have been teaching music full-time for eighteen years. Primarily, I founded and led the Enrichment Center Percussion Ensemble (ECPE), a truly unique and acclaimed group. Our focus was on active music-making, performance, and recording. The group made three professional recordings, performed widely, and challenged audience expectations everywhere they did. Privately, I have taught drumming to many individuals, from young students just starting out, to professional musicians looking to add drums to their instrumental repertoire, to people needing help overcoming sensory issues. My teaching experience has been for as long as I've been playing. Before studying any particular type of pedagogical approach, I've always had the gift and desire to share what I know with others. Formalized study has simply given me specific nomenclature for things. Having said that, my pedagogical approach is simple...discern how the student learns and give them the information clearly in that fashion. There are some people who are very literal and need specific details, whereas there are some who work well with general instruction and prefer to feel things out viscerally. Read More
