Reading and performing music also exercises the same areas of the brain that handle math, language, and critical thinking. For my younger students, I focus on breathing, proper posture, and the fundamentals of music. During my time at Oberlin I took a certification class specifically about string pedagogy. I am very well versed in various methods of technique training for all instruments in the violin family. With beginners I teach in a modified Suzuki method that includes music reading after a few months. In general I focus on technique and then add in the more fun musical gestures. I encourage my students to learn at their own pace, and remind them that learning a skill is not a one size fits all scenario. I have taught every semester I have been in college thanks to being a part of the Musicianship and Advancing Pedagogy--MAP--Program in the College of Musical Arts. I taught for the Middle School and High School Band Academy Programs. There, I taught sectional rehearsal for anywhere between 2-14 students for an hour. Though I will use basic materials to give students the knowledge necessary to begin, I believe it is important to allow students to play things themselves, to make mistakes because that is how we learn. My goal is to teach people music not to show them, meaning I provide the framework for a student's improvement so the student themselves can finish building the way they want to. At the age of three, I developed an interest in music, and spent a lot of time with my little keyboard plucking out songs I heard on tv. Luckily for me, my parents recognized my interest and enrolled me in lessons where I learned to read music before being able to read the words on the pages. I continued my lessons for 15 years with a focus in classical music, earning high marks in competitions. Read More
