For beginner students, i typically like to work with the tried and true Suzuki books, as well as theory practice with Essential Elements for violin, and the Faber books for pianists. I will begin to introduce solo work as skills build, but we will always be working on something that the student genuinely is interested in. For adults/ intermediate or advanced students i try to find what the student is interested in and guide my instruction accordingly to keep lessons fun and engaging while also slightly challenging to further understanding of technical abilities. For beginning students (regardless of age instrument) I try to simplify the approach and work on a set of warm ups/exercises coupled with a performance piece or song that they can feel good about and lots of fun listening assignments. From there I have a few options of instruction methods that I tailor to the individual student. More intermediate/advanced students will not escape from some of the basics (metronome, scales, rudiments etc.) but will be met with many more choices of performance material based more on their individual goals.
