I try to adapt my teaching style to however I see the student (or peer) is most effective in learning. Some people are more chart based, and like the bars written out in time so they can follow it in a more technical manner. Some have a hard time reading music, so they go off of feel. For beginning piano students who are children, I use Piano Adventures books. I also mix it with songs they might like and I can adapt to their level. I encourage my piano young students to sing a bit too. For adults who want to learn how to comp in the piano while they sing, I teach chord theory and rhythm patters, also sight reading if they are interested. I like to start out beginning string students with Essential Elements 2000 by the Hal Leonard company. They have a complete system which includes professionally recorded accompaniments which provide a model for the student to hear how to play with good intonation, tone and rhythm which are the most important basics. In addition I recommend other sheet music with piano accompaniment or books with CD accompaniments that can be performed for friends and family. Read More
