Instruments: Piano Voice

As far as methods, I do not believe that there is one system that will work for every student, and so I try to find the right combination for each individual.  For piano students I begin with a combination of Alfred and Faber method books, and also teach different scales for technique.  For voice students I try to pick a combination of vocal exercises, classical music and contemporary music based on the student’s unique voice.  Students learn best from music they are passionate about.  What is most important is finding the right songs for each person. My entire life, I have been dedicated to the study of music. From my early childhood education to present day gigs and songwriting, music has always been a centerpiece of my life. I have performed all around the world and am incredibly grateful for the learning experiences I have been blessed with. In my time at Berklee I was able to study with George Garzone among other great minds, and helped pay my way by working as a music theory tutor in the college's Core Music Tutoring department. During school I founded a fusion/hip-hop/RB/neo-Soul group, Sangama, to bring some of my compositions to life; and performed/recorded with/co-wrote and arranged with/toured with a progressive folk group, BAERD. Instruments: Piano

I tend to emphasize piano theory and lots and LOTS of practice for my methods I link to success. Piano theory and understanding the circle of fifths and chords with their relative minors, etcetera are extremely important as building blocks to a good knowledge base, especially if you'll be composing. I find that learning how to read sheet music takes a while, but is extremely essential in order to behind fluent in practice. Read More

Hi, I'm Matt! I've been teaching music for over 10 years and I absolutely love doing it! I started to play the guitar when I was 12 years old and have been actively teaching and performing since I was 16 years old. I've performed as a solo artist playing Classical, Jazz, Rock, Blues, Country, and Original music and I've played in various groups including a live Tango band and an acoustic duo. I graduated from the University of Oregon with a Bachelors of Music in Performance. Read More

I believe that fundamentals are the most important, and these should always be a focus. However, I also understand that you play an instrument to have fun as well. I believe that there should be a mixture of hard work and play, and will often assign fundamental exercises combined with solo or duet material. I also believe there should be an overarching goal to be achieved - this could be anything from intonation, to memorizing scales, to performing a recital. Read More
