For beginning Flute students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements.  Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their firset recital performance.  For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. For all beginning students, I start with the Suzuki books. They introduce new techniques in a comprehensible way that helps build upon fundamentals before progressing to more advanced techniques. After a bit with Suzuki, I like to add the Dotzauer etude book, which helps to focus on one technique per etude, building on what we learned earlier in Suzuki. My voice lessons are tailored solely to the abilities and interests of the student. If they prefer classical repertoire, we work through various art songs in Italian, German, French and English, focusing on technique and diction. If they prefer musical theatre, we have fun with the acting side of it, while learning good technique. I will even do some pop songs, if the student so desires, but these songs are generally much simpler. Read More

My students focus on learning to use their whole body as their instrument with proper breathing, posture, and diction. Once great technique is learned, you can use this knowledge for any style and maintain a healthy voice. I teach the whole of music in an effort to teach to all learning biases. Kinetic, Visual, and Aural learners will all have something to learn from in my lessons. We have a hands-on learning for music history, appreciation, light theory, and reading/language in order to supplement learning of the instrument.
