I like to implement the Hanon exercises for scales and warm-ups, also focusing on things like scales and arpeggios. For the guitar, I like to incorporate these concepts with chordal exercises as well, such as playing progressions to let the student's fingers grow accustomed to their forms. For the students who are just starting out, I have the Essential Elements books to help the student learn notes, read music, and with that book it helps because most of the songs you know, Mary Had a Little Lamb for example. As the student grows I move them to something that they would enjoy such as pop music or even movie music, then from there moving the student onto the solo repertoire for recitals in any genre that they want, Jazz, Classical, or other. For beginning students I usually use the Faber method. I usually work through to level 2a then I begin exposing the student to repertoire. Each lesson is spent listening to the work they have done and music theory, of course. I began teaching about five years ago. I mostly have taught younger students, and I love to watch them learn and develop a passion for music. I like to look for fun ways to keep students motivated. I like to use lots of humor while I teach because I think learning should be fun, and music is an amazing art. I have been teaching beginning piano to younger students and flute to students of all ages! I have also had the opportunity to teach overseas when my university's wind ensemble went on tour to Asia. My experience is mostly with classical music, but I have some experience in jazz. Not too much though! I love to encourage a consistent practice schedule and I emphasize having fun while practicing.
