Instruments: Piano Voice
For beginning students who are children, I like to start with Hal Leonard's Piano for Beginners. Progress will depend on the students' willingness to learn and practice as well as encouragement from their parents. For students who already have an understanding of basic fundamentals, I will assess their skill level and select music appropriate for their progression and level of play. Adult beginner students are more than welcome to use piano books. Read More

My teaching experience starts back as a sophomore in high school. To be a teacher, one must be a student first! And I was... In fact, one of the most important lessons I learned from my very first private instructor, was to be able to teach myself!! I have followed this guidance every since then. I started mentoring/teaching other, younger high school students as a junior and found a lot of joy and fulfillment out of it. Read More

I believe in a student learning to hear music and think for themselves. Through ear training, creativity, and learning "how" music works, the goal is to get each student to not need a teacher to learn their instrument, but want a teacher so they may become their best version of it. I focus on this as a primary value in my studio. In lessons, we'll use formulas and concepts to understand "why" things sound good, and "how" we actually get better. Read More

For complete beginners I use the usual method books used in the public schools. As I get to know the student I tailor the lessons to their skill level and personality to teach the fundamentals. More intermediate students I look at what they do well and areas they need to work on such as embouchure or breathing technique. I teach theary and make sure the student learns how to read music. More advanced students I will teach repertoire and advanced books such as Arban's Mehod book. I will always make sure the fundamentals are taught regardless of the skill level. Read More

I work to deconstruct this notion and help to build confidence in their ability to learn and develop. Positive affirmation is how I work. I believe focusing on the strengths of a student while working to develop past what may be perceived as weaknesses is paramount to cultivating a life long relationship with music. Although I am a stickler for practicing, I do this because we are setting goals for each lesson and the only way to reach these goals is through consistent practice. Read More

for beginning students who are children and just starting out, i typically start with the basic elements of either voice or guitar, depending on which lesson you have chosen. once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire which is age - appropriate of course, in hopes of preparing them for a first recital, perhaps. for adults, i try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. In my studio, the most important thing when structuring lessons is to make them individualized. No two lessons look the same in my studio. If a student wants to work on composing, that will be the focus. If the student wants to work on sight-reading, we'll focus on that. Of course, it's important to be a well-rounded musician, but these lessons are for the students' benefit, not mine, so I'll make sure they leave their lessons with what they want to gain. Read More
