My teaching style is improvisational in nature. I focus on creative compositions. In contrast, I present traditional music and learning. I juxtapose the two into a new style of teaching. I mix the old with the new, and thereby create my own style. Much as in the fashion of Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do with my intention on music education. Read More

I believe that a strong foundation is essential for steady progress and confident performance. A comprehensive approach is my preference. Therefore, when I teach piano, I prefer Faber and Faber Piano Adventures paired with A Dozen a Day for added technique. Since many students in this school district are in band or orchestra, I usually use Essential Elements for Strings, Brass, and Woodwinds. I spend a reasonable amount of time preparing my students for our recitals and many of them join in the group songs, which have included "What a Wonderful World", "Happy", and currently "The Theme From Midnight Cowboy". Chamber music (small group) is what gives me the most satisfaction in playing and performing. In orchestral music, every wind player is a soloist. As a chamber player, not only is everyone a soloist on their part, but, the musical demands of being a rhythmic, melodic and harmonic foundation for each others' primary voice are broader, deeper, more technically challenging, and, can be truly intimate and immensely expressive communication. The Brass Quintet introduced me to Chamber Music. Read More

I suggest playing for ten minutes at one time working through each exercise for those ten minutes before taking a rest for 20 minutes. Then move to the next etude or scale. Start with a consistent warm up in the middle of your range. The warm up should be the same every time wherein students can expand on their warm up on their own. This warm up is part of the first ten minutes of practice time. Read More

I began teaching piano and clarinet while I was in high school. I currently teach 1st grade in the Fairfield area as well as have a few private students. My students have been selected for county honor bands, all northern honor bands, all state honor bands and even all national honor bands. I encourage regular practice and always find music that peaks their interests and makes them want to practice while also working on foundational skills. Read More

I have been teaching for 20 years, with my own business for 10 years. My teaching style is very student centered. This allows me to focus on their unique abilities and interests while building a solid musical foundation. Individualized teaching is my passion. I adapt my teaching style to each students' learning style and then teach them how to express themselves individually through music. I still use traditional methods to build good technique and practice habits, but allow my students to bring their own interests' into our lessons. Read More

My basic approach to teaching is to evaluate where the student will be most able to gain skill and knowledge that helps them reach whatever their musical goal is. I customize my teaching to each students needs and abilities to optimize success and progress. I found thru my years of teaching hundreds of students that the ones who feel they got something they were wanting to learn are the most motivated to keep going. Read More
