I give all of my students a mixture of technical exercises, repertoire pieces, and creative assignments to keep things interesting and varied. We will spend about half of the lesson on technique and theory, and the other half on understanding, and appreciating different musical styles and how to improvise comfortably and confidently over them. I have a much heavier focus on songwriting, and composing than most teachers, and I encourage my students to be as creative as possible while giving them the tools to do so effectively and correctly. My teaching experience sates back to running trumpet sectionals (in Junior High High School) for an All Star Jazz Band in my home town. When I was 16 I started teaching younger trumpet students as well. I descovered early on that I had a passion for directing and teaching. This stayed with me, and I always have incorporated education into my directing and leadership styles as a perormer. As a Musical Director for Royal Caribbean I would regularly have to teach an hour long show to my international band in under an hour and a half.I know that learning an instrument is hard work and that motivation is key to success. For beginner students, it is important to start with the basic fundamentals and techniques, but once those are mastered, there is more freedom to explore. For intermediate students, we work on filling in gaps they may have in their current understanding of music/guitar, and anything else they want to work toward.
