For beginning students who have no experience on their instrument, I usually spend a fair chunk of time working on basic technique using books like the Essential Elements series or Greg Horne's similar books for folk instruments. I usually combine the book material with other songs/pieces relevant to each student's interests. My teaching experience sates back to running trumpet sectionals (in Junior High High School) for an All Star Jazz Band in my home town. When I was 16 I started teaching younger trumpet students as well. I descovered early on that I had a passion for directing and teaching. This stayed with me, and I always have incorporated education into my directing and leadership styles as a perormer. As a Musical Director for Royal Caribbean I would regularly have to teach an hour long show to my international band in under an hour and a half.I know that learning an instrument is hard work and that motivation is key to success. Every student should be challenged, but nobody should ever feel as if music is some form of art that is lost on them. I have been teaching musicians of all ages and levels ever since my first year of undergraduate in 2016. I have been contracted every summer since then by Summer Sonatina, a piano camp in Bennington, VT, to teach five to six 45 minute lessons a day. While I do teach at all levels, I tend to gravitate more towards serious intermediate-advanced students.
