With beginning students, I use exercises from Suzuki and Essential Elements books as a basis for note reading, but I also frequently use "echo" or "call-and-response" playing. I find this is especially important in developing a student's ear for pitch and tone early on. As a student progresses and their musical interests develop, I combine standard classical repertoire that I grew up playing with song transcriptions of film, jazz, and rock music formatted to match each student's ability level and current technical goals. What I like most about lessons is working with the student towards the common goal of making them a better musician. That is done by reaching many smaller goals over the course of weeks and months and possibly years together. With that in mind, I like my lessons to be an open conversation between the two of us. A full hour lesson usually consists of an instructional course book, a song or two that the student enjoys plus ear training, theory, harmony or else according to the students' needs, interest and the level. Tailoring the lesson for each student and having fun with him/her is the key! To begin with, I teach my students how to develop their own warm up method which includes breathing and stretching, vocalizations and good old fashioned solfege. You will learn to understand your own vocal mechanism and how it resonates, as well as how breath support works, and their effects on the singing voice.
