I like to build units or goals for each student when private teaching . It helps me and the student know what needs to be worked on. I also tend to be a visual instructor , meaning I like to use tricks to teach students different vocal technique. Although I do not mind accommodating to a students needs if their instruction is to be taught differently. I want to make lessons as fun and educational as possible and I expect student to put in their input to what they want to learn. Read More

My typical process for working with a new student is to begin with the end in mind. According to the particular needs and expectations of the student, we discuss attainable and measurable goals for a given period of time. With that in mind, I devise tailor-made lesson plans that may include materials from esteemed method books (Arban, Bordogni, Cimera, Edwards, Mantia, Marstellar, Schlossberg, etc.) and exercises of my own design. For beginning students I prefer to use either Alfred's, Mel Bay, or Hal Leonard method books. I generally stay away from method books that use guitar tablature because I find that student will prefer to read the tablature instead of standard musical notation. Tablature is a good way to easily show how guitar parts are played, but is not useful when teaching standard notation, music theory, harmony, etc. In addition to using a method book, I will also teach the student popular songs, which is a great way to start teaching chords and song structure in addition to keeping the lesson fun and the student engaged. I started teaching during my last two years at Berklee. I discovered that I actually preferred teaching over gigging. So, after graduating, I started working as a full-time guitar instructor at Mars Music in the Dallas area. When they went out of business I took over most of the students and started working on my own. Over the years I have worked for a variety of music schools as well as privately. Read More

My approach to doing lessons tends to be high enthusiasm and high standards. I am a firm believer in the idea of using focused practice and developing healthy self-criticism skills to build character. Creating lofty (but achievable) goals, setting standards, and persevering through challenges, is not only a great way to become a better musician, but is also a great way to become a better person. It is with this concept that I approach my lessons. Read More
