One of the first questions I ask a new student is what music they are currently listening to and what piece they would like to learn. Sometimes they are shy and I don't really get an answer out of them but after they become comfortable with me I get an idea of what they want to learn. To my shocking surprise many kids from this modern era have no clue who John Lennon or Bob Dylan are and it is essential for me to expose them to all sorts of music from Bach to The Beatles to Chopin and The Cure! My teaching style is all about enjoying music and the instrument. I can pick up when a student is frustrated, confused or embarrassed and adjust the lesson accordingly. Overall, I want my students to have fun! I enjoy teaching how to read music and once a few notes are learned, I start applying it to songs that my students really enjoy. I also like to teach scales and harmonic structure so my students can begin to understand what's really going on in the music they enjoy. Read More
Instruments: Piano Voice
My teaching style is two part. Many teachers approach each student with the same routine and technique, and don't really listen to the issues the student has or wants to discuss. I listen to students' thoughts and observations, and address their issues and concerns specifically; as well as coming in with my own plan for what can be improved and how to go about achieving the students' goals and what needs to occur for improvement in my professional opinion. Instruments: Drums
Nice, friendly and patient. The most important part of the lesson is the state of mind. For anyone, going to a lesson should be an event to look forward to, nothing else. So, I try to make the drummer in everyone "go to work", even though I take the easy approach. And I love it when the students feel like they get it. Read More
Instruments: Piano
In my piano teaching practice, I employ a diverse range of methods to ensure that students receive a comprehensive musical education. Utilizing Keith Snell's method books as a primary resource, I strive to provide a solid foundation in piano technique, repertoire, and musicianship. Additionally, I incorporate Julie McIntosh Johnson's theory method books, tailoring the materials to each student's unique skill level in order to deepen their understanding of music theory. Instruments: Guitar
For beginning students, especially children, I typically start with foundational exercises and simple songs to help them build confidence and a solid grasp of guitar basics. Once theyve mastered the fundamentals, I introduce solo pieces that suit their skill level and prepare them for their first performance, whether its a small recital or just playing for family and friends. For adult students, I focus on understanding their musical interestswhether its J-pop, classical, or another genreand tailor my lessons to keep them engaging and enjoyable. Read More

I began teaching private music lessons in college in 2003. I have been teaching lessons consistently for the last 10 years from my home studio, online, as well as traveling to the students' home. I find great pleasure in hearing a student's progress, that's why I encourage recording their practice and having a consistent practice schedule. I feel it is important to give positive reinforcement and feedback to students. I am always excited to bring on new students of many different age groups! I believe it is important to keep the lesson interesting to the student by incorporating music for technique but also songs that the student enjoys playing. Read More
