Besides scales, etudes, and pieces, I want to encourage my students to come to me with any questions about the music they are playing in their school music classes, orchestras, theory questions, and help with any technical instrument issues, like tuning, fixing strings, finding a good shoulder rest, how to rosin your bow and how much to tighten it. For beginning students, I like the Suzuki method for violin. I've been trained in that method. I'm also very flexible and like to incorporate other styles into our lessons. I believe that students develop skills quickly when they have a good understanding of hand position, note reading and ear training. I am a huge fan of the Arban's technique book for brass, but I like to keep lessons fun with songs that challenge my students at their level. Once the student has progressed to the intermediate level - solid fundamentals, musicianship, and a desire for learning - I introduce solo repertoire. For young beginners, I generally teach from the Nancy and Randall Faber Piano Adventure series, however I have recently been working to become more familiar with other options in order to best accomodate individual students. I am now also familiar with Alfred's Piano Method books, as well as the Hal Leonard series for young students. I have also taught by books from the same composers for an older beginner. I am a great fan of recitals, and as I build my studio I will collaborate with fellow piano teachers in the area to hold them. Read More
