It has been truly rewarding to see students' growth when they smile after finishing learning a song! Recently I did a practice flute challenge for my students, they were rewarded with a gift card if they completed the number of minutes they needed for 4 weeks. Having a goal in mind for them, pushed them to practice different things with a focused mindset. Once we master it we begin simple pieces to apply technique. Then we progress to more complex playing. And pick harder pieces to play. After 25 years of study I still practice my excersices daily. When I first start working with students, I strictly work on warmups for a few lessons. The first lesson is usually when students get their jitters out about singing in front of someone and learn that I'm really not a scary person. I also get to know where their voice sits, what is beautiful about their voice and what we could work on. As a musician and teacher, I primarily view music as one means of artistic self-expression. In my students journey of self-expression, I will help them to learn music history, music theory, and different musical cultures which can influence their perspective on the world around them, as well as how they see themselves. Through music I teach self-discipline, patience, and good practice methods while learning the flute.
